About
Buddhist Pine is commonly seen in Buddhist temples, and its Chinese name, Arhat Pine, reflects the Buddhist spirit. The name is inspired by the way its fleshy receptacle turns red at maturity, akin to the body of a monk, while the spherical seed growing on top of the seed holder resembles the head of a monk. Together, these features evoke the image of a monk wearing a Kasaya. In addition, the bract attached to the seed holder resembles a monk's hands folded in prayer. Buddhist Pine has a long cultivation history. Its soft and easily shaped branches make it a popular choice for bonsai and potted plants, contributing to its status as a favoured ornamental species in gardens.
