Part of the Caesalpiniaceae family, Hong Kong Orchid Tree is known for its large, purplish-red flowers, which feature striking dark purple stripes on the upper petals. The "x" in its scientific name, Bauhinia x blakeana, signifies that it is a hybrid species. Studies suggest that its male and female parent species are Camel's Foot Tree (Bauhinia variegata) and Purple Camel's Foot Tree (Bauhinia purpurea), respectively.
